Oh god, the customers that put books back on the shelf laying on top of the shelf! Why? There's a gap right there, where you took it out! Especially when they do it right in front of me. The (independent, mostly used) bookstore I work at prides itself on having the best customer service in the city, so I can't retaliate with anything resembling sarcasm unless it's actually insulting/threatening/etc. I run the kids' section of the bookstore, and I think my one thing I'd like customers to know is PLEASE don't ask me to recommend books to your kid who has already said they don't want recommendations. They're annoyed, and I'm annoyed. Nothing I say is going to pique their interest because they are already resentful that they aren't being allowed to just look at the books they're interested in. Recommendations can be tricky enough without the other person actively fighting against you on them. Also, if I am recommending books, please actually give me feedback about why you're not interested in that one. Recommending five different series and getting only shrugs or Nah in reply doesn't really help me.
